Shout London at Austin's Coffee

Austin’s Coffee is a local favorite among Rollins, Full Sail, Valencia and UCF students. Open 24 hours a day and 365 days of the year, it is the ideal place for insomniacs of all ages. On Friday May 10th, a Florida pop-rock band called Shout London headlined a benefit show for a friend’s friend, who is currently in a coma after being involved in a car accident. The victim’s family needed help with their medical bills, so singer Tyler Whiting was happy to announce during the performance that all proceeds from band merchandise would be given to them. The stage was much too small for a 6 piece band, their equipment claustrophobically piled around them. The energy of their music was fit for a larger venue. Since most local bands do not have roadies, they themselves can be seen loading their vehicles after a show, which is a lot like watching a live 3-D version of Tetris.

Originally, singer Tyler Whiting wanted to be a strictly acoustic solo act, because he was tired of the band scene. That was, until Adam Browning volunteered to play drums for him. “We went out and bought a drumset from Sam Ash the very next day. We thought, hey, this band idea might not be too bad, and figured we should recruit more members.” Whiting wrote all of Shout London’s current songs, but for their next album he hopes it will be a joint effort between everyone. “we’ve only been around for 3 months. Actually, our newest member just joined 2 weeks ago! There’s 6 people in the band but this is the first time we’re all here performing together.” He said it is often difficult to find practice time and to work around everyone’s schedules, but he is satisfied with everyone’s musical capabilities. “I’m really blessed to have these guys in my band, cause everyone’s talented. I’m very leader like, Brendan and Kevin really know music theory, while me, Chris and Harley know how to organize everything. Adam is a little of everything, kind of in the middle. We teach each other stuff, too. Also, I know that I can rely on all of them. The eventual goal is for everyone to be a part of every show.” Whiting started singing because, while he was in other bands, “nobody would want to step up to the plate, so initially I just did it for that reason. Then I started singing in the car to get better, to see what I could do.”

Some of their musical influences include Mayday Parade, All Time Low and We The Kings. Keyboardist Kevin Fetchel appeared to suggest that even those who do not normally like this kind of music can still attend their shows, adding, “the kind of music we play isn’t the kind I normally listen to.” Describing themselves as a Warped Tour style band, they have nearly 4,000 Likes on their facebook page and have reached approximately 60,000 people through various social media sites. Harley Marcel, lead guitarist, has been playing since he was 8 years old, and so being in a band seemed like the natural thing to do. “We aren’t doing it for the money. We’re doing it for the passion of the music, but getting big wouldn’t be a bad thing.” Recommended songs include Don’t You Dare, A Little Bit Longer, Give Me A Chance, Figure It Out and The Fight. Shout London consists of Tyler Whiting on vocals, Adam Browning on drums, Brendan Hirst on Bass, Kevin Fechtel on keyboard synth, Harley Marcel on lead guitar and Chris Metz on rhythm guitar.
