The Plush Monsters

The Plush monsters are a tropical rock n’ roll ride with many turns and twists, a creation of sunny pop/rock that is not afraid of the dark. The band was born in the Summer of 2012. Natura Coffee and Tea was hosting an Open Mic Night, where David Hanson and Adam Goodrich played in a band called Goodrich and the Die Tryins. Childhood friends Thommy Laverack and Bryan Sherbrook happened to be there and “after that, everything just fell together” according to Sherbrook. They hail from the Florida towns of Narcoossee, Vero Beach and Sebastian, along with Boston, Massachusetts.
The Plush Monsters take their inspiration from a simple love of music. Drummer Dave Hanson took piano lessons for years as a kid and says he has never regretted time spent playing music. “I'm inspired by people who have succeeded and created a body of work that will last forever. I want to be a part of the world's soundtrack.” Goodrich majored in Jazz Composition in college, and Laverack started out playing piano at a young age.
When it comes to songwriting, a lot of time is spent making each arrangement captivate an audience. According to Sherbrook, “I try to write songs that convey emotion, have some degree of beautiful aesthetic for the listener's enjoyment and something different or interesting in the composition to challenge and excite listener's that want more from music. Good melody, good lyrics, good atmosphere, good structure. Those are the four pillars I try to balance.”
Like any other band, the Plush Monsters have their struggles. Networking issues, time management and money are their major concerns. With everyone holding day jobs, it can be difficult to get everyone together for recording sessions and rehearsals. They openly admitted that, unlike some who invest a lot in appearances, fashion is not a Plush Monster strength. But they do have cool hipster shoes and a flashy wristwatch or two. Friendship, talent, likability and dedication keep the band together. “I'm sure we'll learn to hate each other eventually,” Laverack warns, “especially if we get successful. So, if anything, people should support us for the potential drama!”
The band declined to reveal any of the real words to their songs. “We like to let listeners interpret the lyrics,” Laverack explains. “Since I don't enunciate when I sing, people think they hear all kinds of different lyrics. I know that for me, it's usually a letdown when I learn the real words to a song and they aren't what I thought they were.” For those who may not have heard their music, Marry Me, Dew Grass and Right On are recommended songs.
They are currently recording an album and booking a Spring Tour through Georgia. Come see them at Austin’s Coffee on February 23rd and at Will’s Pub on February 26th.
